When I came back from the printing shop, I put my History Painting on the door of my cupboard at the office - as I often do with important papers, pictures I like, things I need to remember. Some of them have been on my office walls - different countries, different buildings - for quite a long time. Then I realised that, in a way, bits of papers on my cupboard are more revealing about who I am than my own face, so that's what you get. The face of a very young me is on the picture as well, in between Captain Picard's and the Borg's.

I had no special reason to get a History Painting; I just clicked and clicked and clicked until my PC asked me: Do you want to save this file? I'm very glad I did.

Location: Magog, Québec, Canada / Green bars: 1

I'm so stupid, I'm holding the print upside down. So the green bar should be on the right. Oh well...

Motivation : I'm an artist. I love art. Even if I live in Canada, I read the Guardian. I find their Art and Design section quite interesting. So I read the paper that morning, saw the link and clicked on it for the fun of it. And here's my print.

Location: New Zealand / Green bars: 1

Moved to London… fell in love with the city, fell in love with a girl and developed an addiction to The Guardian. No longer in the city, still in love with the girl and get my fix from The Guardian online. Saw link, clicked on link, won a Keith Tyson print.

Please find attached a picture of the history painting I have. It's against a background of my name encoded as an "EAN 128 Mode B" barcode. So it's sort of me holding the picture, right? (I will get it printed over xmas hol's, but wanted to send this, not a photo)

I wanted to get a history painting because I am the sort of glutton for idiocy that will take some free interactive art, try to flog it on ebay, then slag off its originator online when I can't figure out why no-one's biting. Not really. I quite like encoded things - names, locations, etc.

Location: Amsterdam / Green bars: 1

Motivation: Via link on the Guardian website. Seemed like an interesting method of producing and distributing art. I thought it would be interesting to be a part of it; to view [as an 'insider', I
suppose] how it progressed. I confess I'm not much of an art connoisseur, but I am interested in the interconnectedness of the World...

About myself: A scientist (radiochemist, should it matter), by profession, studying for my PhD in Amsterdam, having moved recently from London. Originally hailing from that town of mirrors and roundabouts, Milton Keynes. Um... mid-twenties; I own a solar-powered watch and a Tilley hat, in addition to the Tyson print. The day after the print 'competition' was the departmental poker tournament; I came last, but being one of the 5000 was some consolation. Marmite: love.

To the Keith Tyson History Painting Winners

keithtyson5000 is a project that grows out of the DNA of Keith Tyson's History Paintings.

We hope to create a piece of collaborative Internet art with the community of winners that we can gift back to Keith Tyson.

To start things off, the first step of the project means that we need you to email us the following:

  1. An image of you with your Keith Tyson History Painting print (please do not send the original pdf)
  2. The location you entered on your print
  3. Share with us what your motivations were that led you to download a History Painting.
  4. If any, how many green bars your print has
  5. Tell us as much – or as little - as you want to about yourself… it’s entirely up to you.
Please note that any of the above may be used in an artwork or blog, unless you state otherwise.

Thanks!
the curators
